About Ducks & Drakes

Ducks and Drakes sits upon a double section of downtown New Plymouth and has been owned by Brett & Paula since September 2014. Originally built as a stately manor back in 1926, the main building has evolved through a few different eras since. Its life as the Inverness Hotel in the 1940’s is documented in photos in the foyer near reception.

From the late 90’s the backpackers was called “Shoestring Backpackers” and the motel “Cottage Mews” up until a new owner renamed the business “Ducks and Drakes Hotel” in 2011.

Upon the purchase of the business Brett & Paula changed the name slightly to “Ducks and Drakes Boutique Motel & Backpackers” to more accurately reflect its offer.

Many guests speak to the homely feel of the atmosphere and take advantage of the range of space within the complex from the grassed, landscaped courtyard and two outdoor deck areas to the most amazing sunroom, cosy lounge room with a wood fire and the dining room which has become the social hub of the place.

Amenities include a barista coffee machine (we support Escape Coffee, a local roaster), a sauna and bikes for hire including a tandem bike.
