Ducks and Drakes started life in the 1920’s as the gracious "Inverness Private Hotel", complete with crisp white table cloths and silver service. It catered to the adventurers of the day, lured by the irresistible call of the Mountain; the ruggedly beautiful coastline; the sparkling black volcanic sand beaches; the lush countryside, abundant parklands and a showcase of private gardens complemented by a moderate climate.
More than 90 years later this rugged and proud region continues to attract visitors from around New Zealand and around the world. ‘The Inverness’ became ‘Shoestring Backpackers and Cottage Mews’ for a time, before undergoing a vibrant facelift. Today as ‘Ducks and Drakes’ the focus is on fun and informality, providing a range of accommodation that won’t blow the budget of the modern day traveler – a venue to meet other travelers, swap stories and make new friends - steering clear of the bland and predictable.
